Westminster was a member of the Steve Fund’s Mental Health Equity Commission Cohort, where an external organization conducted quantitative and qualitative assessment on our campus’s resources for mental health for students of color. As part of the assessment, we assembled a racial history narrative, and the external org conducted focus groups with students of color, assessed data from the Counseling Center, and surveyed students. Over 100 students took the survey.

We also conducted a climate survey, where we surveyed students and employees on their perceptions of the campus's climate towards race and racial acceptance.

The external organization (Steve Fund) utilized qualitative and quantitative data from Westminster College’s faculty, staff, and students to establish a campus racial narrative, describe current and historical trends in mental health support and understand campus context for students of color from various perspectives. From this emerged five evidence-based recommendations to support the institution’s efforts forward: 1. Identify and promote the mental health and well-being of students of color as a campus-wide priority.
The current report describes findings from a needs assessment, the initial stage of the EMHF. This needs assessment was a multi-method examination of the mental health concerns of students of color, as well as institutional progress and gaps in promoting the well-being of students of color. Researchers from each of the institutions worked with the Steve Fund team to develop a Data Toolkit and have access to various data reports. Data for the needs assessment include quantitative surveys and reports, qualitative listening sessions with students, staff, and faculty, and archival data and oral histories that capture the racial history of the institution. This needs assessment was conducted by two research consultants, both Black women with relevant research expertise in identifying predictors of mental health outcomes within multiple contexts, including education.
