Addressing Historic Injustices (3.0)

This is an optional Innovation & Leadership (IL) credit. IL credits recognize institutions that are seeking innovative solutions to sustainability challenges and demonstrating sustainability leadership in ways that are not otherwise captured in STARS. Scoring in the Innovation and Leadership section is capped at 10 bonus points total.

Suggestions for Institutions

  • Work with your institution’s Diversity office or similar to determine whether the institution’s work to address historic injustices qualifies. 

Potential Data Quality Issues

  • Evidence of publicly acknowledging and addressing an institution’s historic involvement in slavery, land theft, and/or other injustices is required. 
  • If earning the full 1 bonus point, there must be indication that the institution partnered with the communities impacted by its historic involvement in injustices to develop and implement a program of atonement, reparation, or repatriation.
