Energy System Certification (3.0)

This is an optional Innovation & Leadership (IL) credit. IL credits recognize institutions that are seeking innovative solutions to sustainability challenges and demonstrating sustainability leadership in ways that are not otherwise captured in STARS. Scoring in the Innovation and Leadership section is capped at 10 bonus points total.

What is an energy management system?

An energy management system (EMS) establishes energy policies, objectives, energy targets, and action plans and processes and works to achieve those objectives and targets.

What standards qualify for this credit?

  • Work with your institution’s energy management team(s) and similar to determine whether an energy system certification has been achieved, and/or to consider pursuing such certifications.

Potential Data Quality Issues

  • To count, the institution must have an energy management system (EMS) or electricity delivery system (e.g., microgrid) that is currently certified under ISO 50001, PEER, or an equivalent standard approved by AASHE. Affirmative responses must be supported.
