A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Project GLACIER (Global Change Initiative Education and Research) brings Boston University graduate students to local classrooms to directly participate in climate change education. This partnership between K-12 and higher education is intended to empower graduate students, to transform graduate education, and most importantly, to enhance K-12 education. BU’s GLACIER has partnered with the school districts of Cambridge, Brookline, Newton, and Somerville, and has placed a total of 10 fellows in their classrooms.
GLACIER explores topics such as geography, environment, earth science, engineering, biology, and statistics through the lens of global change. During the academic year, GLACIER fellows attend a weekly seminar where they investigate global change from a multi-disciplinary perspective and brainstorm with one another on how to translate this complex material into curriculum modules for the classroom. The program also requires teachers and fellows to collect data on specific trees in their local environment in order to demonstrate to the participating schools how their local communities are influenced by global change.
