A brief description of the postconsumer food waste composting program:
There are currently around 15 sites for post-consumer waste collection on both campuses (mostly on the downtown campus). These bins were placed after a pilot period over the summer of 2011 to establish what style of compost bin would distinguish itself the most as something new (not a recycling or trash bin). The bins are brown slim bins lined with compostable bags and accompanied by educational signage which indicate what items can be placed in them. Additional education is provided by volunteers who stand near the bins on alternating days of the week each week to answer questions and pro-actively inform the community about the new bins. The food waste from these bins is sent to the composter on the west campus.
