Environmental & Social Innovation Program

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

Sustainable GW and its partners provide an Environmental and Social Innovation Program focused on the Washington, D.C. community. The program provides GW students with an integrated curricular education and co-curricular experience to research, design, and implement a project that addresses equity and justice related to environmental issues. Students take the course Community-Engaged Research to Promote Environmental Justice where they research the issues and propose a project. Through grant programs including the Eco-Equity Challenge and DC Climathon, students design and implement their ideas with funding and mentoring support from GW faculty and staff. Ideas are rooted in a community asset-based approach and are sustained through community-based partnerships. The Environmental and Social Innovation Program is a partnership of the GW Office of Sustainability, the Nashman Center for Civic Engagement, and the Provost's Office. The teaching and mentoring team coordinate closely together to support students with academic foundations and practical implementation.
