The name of the campaign(s):
RecycleMania 2012

A brief description of the campaign(s):

HACC campuses in Harrisburg and Lebanon participated in the 2012 RecycleMania, a nation-wide competition between colleges and universities to improve recycling participation. RecycleMania impacted the entire participating campuses - students, faculty and staff. The Office for Sustainability coordinated the promotion, student recruitment, and collection and data processing. Three student clubs, the Social Impact Social Awareness, the Environmental Club and the US Green Building Council Student Chapter (Harrisburg campus) obtained recycling bins from the OFS for campus placement to increase recycling, and conducted promotional events. A pilot study was conducted by the SISA Club in one classroom building to increase recycling rates. The Harrisburg Facilities Department hosted a "Bottles in a Bottle" competition as a means to discuss the importance of recycling to students.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign(s):

As a result of the RecycleMania competition, the recycling rates showed a measurable increase in total weight of recyclables diverted from landfill disposal, resulting in a 1st place finish among Pennsylvania colleges and universities. Therefore, the competition results led to a measurable, positive impact on the sustainability of the college.
