The Sustainability Council is organized to achieve these college-wide objectives: (1) foster a culture of sustainability at HCC (2) serve as an advisory body to HCC Administration that will provide input and guidance on matters related to sustainability, operations and planning (3) engage and educate students, faculty, staff and administrators of HCC through various learning opportunities, events and curriculum (4) create opportunities for cooperative outreach and initiatives that serve the greater community.

The college-wide committee is composed of the Sustainability Coordinator, one representative from each of the five college campuses (Dale Mabry, Ybor, Brandon, Plant City and SouthShore), and up to five at-large members from faculty and staff district-wide.

Although the college does have an Office of Sustainability, it is not staffed by a full-time employees, but rather a part-time employee and several students interns.

A brief description of the activities and substantive accomplishments of the institution-wide coordinating body or officer during the previous three years:

The Sustainability Coordinator works together with the Sustainability Council to coordinate activities across the college. Over the past three years, a host of community engagement activities, including bee hive tours, wastewater/waste facility tours, kayaks trips, farm tours and hikes have been provided to students and staff. The college also comes together for work days to improve the food forest at the Brandon campus. Individually, the campuses get volunteers to engage in campus beautification. Finally, there is college-wide coordination on e-cycling and seed libraries.

The role of the position is to provide programmatic oversight and leadership to the college’s Sustainability Programs, lead the Office of Sustainability, and to serve as the chair of the Sustainability Council. The position serves a three-year term.
