A brief description of the institution’s green event certification program:

The Zero Waste Events Certification program is designed to curb solid waste generation from events held on campus and to facilitate compliance with California State Bill SB 1383 (aka the Short-Lived Climate Pollutant Reduction law), which requires composting/organics recycling and food recovery. Students, faculty and staff hosting a gathering on campus requiring campus support services (food, facilities, financial services) must submit an event request in LumberJack Link (https://humboldt.presence.io/form/event-registration). Embedded within this form are required fields and further information for the event certification. Event organizers can select whether or not they want to make the event Green Certified, or if they wish to receive more information (if so a student green event coordinator will contact them to discuss). If food is served, the organizer must select the type of dishware that will be used. There are only two options: reusable dishware or locally compostable/recyclable dishware. Also, if food is served at the event the organizer must acknowledge they understand the laws requiring single-use food packaging be locally compostable/recyclable, and that larger events require donations of edible leftover food. Also in this form the organizer must select if leftover food will be donated to the on-campus food pantry (if so, the food pantry is contacted). Once the organizer completes and submits the form, an email is sent to zerowaste@humboldt.edu. Student green event coordinators send the event organizer the Zero Waste Event Certification Checklist (https://facilitymgmt.humboldt.edu/sites/default/files/zw_event_checklist_1_0.pdf) and provide consultation if requested. After signing and returning the checklist, the organizer can use the Certified Zero Waste Event logo for their fliers and invitations. See the attached document for the steps to certification, including screen grabs of the registration form.
