A brief description of the sustainability-focused immersive program(s) offered by the institution:

Environmental Lab (ENVS 210). Students survey salamander populations in the Brown Family Environmental Center habitats and conduct tree surveys to determine species diversity. Students also research climate change projections for this area of the US to report on recommendations for stakeholders in the area.

Permaculture Winter Farming Community (SOCY 234). Students conduct field research on various aspects of Knox County rural life to develop public projects that enhance community sustainability.

Fieldwork: Rural Life (SOCY 477Y, 478Y). This course investigates the factors affecting community sustainability and the importance of vital communities to our individual and collective well-being.

Sustainable Agriculture Class (ENVS253). This course introduces students to the principles of sustainable agriculture through field experiences on local farms and the study of current literature.

Life Along the Kokosing (ANTH 291) This seminar examines the meaning and significance of connection to place through an intensive investigation of Knox County. Time is spent surrounding locale, exploring the landscape and interacting with individuals knowledgeable about community life. Complementing these field experiences, scholarship in the arts, humanities, and sciences will address how natural, economic, social, and cultural conditions inform rural character and personal identity. A public project is created.

Ecology Laboratory (BIOL229). This course provides direct experience with diverse groups of organisms and the methods used to learn about them.

Rural By Design- Funded by a grant from the McGregor Foundation, Rural by Design is a three-year project to enhance local rural sustainability. In a holistic approach integrating the arts, humanities, and sciences, the project explores the broad range of forces--social, economic, environmental, natural--shaping sustainability in an era of expanding globalization.
