A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome :

Maryville College provides a required environmental course for all freshmen. Titled FRS130: Perspectives on the Environment, the three-week January Term course provides social, natural scientific and humanistic perspectives on the environment. Connections to East TN's natural history, and personal environmental ethical issues, along with exposure to statistics and laboratory work for all students, are aspects of the course. The course has been in existence in the MC curriculum since January 1997.

Maryville College believes it is one of the few US undergraduate colleges requiring an undergraduate environmental course of all freshmen.
