Pratt’s Center for Climate Adaptation https://www.pratt.edu/center-for-climate-adaptation/ was officially recognized as a Provost Research Center in recognition of its extensive engagement with both national and international partners. This included accreditation with the United Nations Water Conference which involved organizing a series of events, a high level panel discussion at the UN headquarters, a charret at Pratt’s Research Yard with brought together community groups from Staten Island, Queens and the Bronx with students from Pratt, Princeton and Singapore, plus a conference on Governors Island which included local partners plus the Inter-American Development Bank, World Research Institute and the Singapore University of Design and Technology.

PALS - Partnership for Academic Leadership in Sustainability
The Partnership for Academic Leadership on Sustainability (PALS) unites art and design colleges and universities in a collaborative effort to solve the challenges of global climate change through the power of creativity and an art and design education. PALS assists participating schools to build better strategies to support society and the environment through the integration of sustainability principles into their current programs. It empowers PALS Fellows from participating schools to develop new courses by building and supporting collaboration and networking across their home institutions and across the Pals Cohort.
The value of PALS lies in its ability to leverage collective resources and foster a community of peer institutions to integrate sustainability into the core of art and design education. There is no other current initiative where this is happening in the landscape of art and design higher education. We seek participation of art and design colleges and universities to join the PALS Cohort.
PALS was founded at Pratt Institute in 2010 and included members from the majority of AICAD schools. From 2010 - 2017, 46 colleges and universities, including over 100 faculty, staff and administrators, participated. We are excited to announce that the PALS Summit and Cohort are being relaunched in the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year.

Pratt is partnering with the College of Environmental Science and Forestry at SUNY Syracuse to assess the use of mass timber for the construction of affordable housing. The partnership also includes New York City Mayor’s Office and the District Council of Carpenters and will involve analysis of city-owned sites that are zoned for residential development and are currently under-built. ESF has identified local sources of timber as part of an effort to create an upstate/downstate supply chain. https://www.esf.edu/

When the NY Climate Exchange was designated by New York City to create a center for research on climate change and adaptation strategies, Pratt organized a series of campus-wide “town halls” to identify and prioritize ways for faculty and students to engage. Those meetings led to three ongoing working groups to develop programs which Pratt could pursue in partnership with NYCE. The groups were focused by issue area including the built environment, K-12 curriculum development and programming, and creative activation. Over the past 9 months, each of the groups has met several times and developed their priorities and strategies which has led to Pratt significant impact in the design of what will be the first large (400,000sf) mass timber building in New York, the development of a partnership with Sesame Workshop to create programming to increase climate literacy for young teens, and a collaboration with Earth Matter, a non-profit organization on Governors Island, to create models for teaching and activating programs for composting.
