The Alameda Point Collaborative (APC) transformed vacant military housing on the former Alameda Naval Air Station into a supportive housing community. APC now provides over 500 formerly homeless residents with the safety and stability of a place to call home. APC also provides a Farm to Market social enterprise, a plant nursery and on the job training to community members. Saint Mary's College has a close, ongoing formal relationship with APC. SMC provides material support in the form of student support & soil/lead testing & research, FT summer fellows, and placement of FT VISTA Members; we provide periodic financial support through joint grants. An astounding 1 in 6 residents turn to the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano Counties for emergency and supplemental food. Many of our neighbors are unable to make ends meet and the Food Bank helps them cover one of life’s basic needs. Saint Mary’s College provides support to the Contra Costa & Solano Food Bank in the form of regular student volunteers and donations of nonperishable food annually during Sustainable Move Out. White Pony Express (WPE) is a volunteer-powered nonprofit with a mission to eliminate hunger and poverty by delivering the abundance to those in need. White Pony Express serves 120,000 people each year through more than 80 partner agencies. WPE has rescued and delivered more than 18 million pounds of nutritious food (equal to 15 million meals), preventing more than 17,000 tons of CO2 emissions from entering the air we breathe. Saint Mary’s provides support to White Pony Express through our campus food recovery program. Saint Mary’s donates excess food from our dining hall, catering services and events to White Pony Express throughout the year.
