SUNY Cortland has governing policies which require all renovated facilities to be LEED-NC Silver certifiable and all NEW facilities to be LEED-NC silver certified buildings. In the past 5-years, we have exceeded the LEED-NC Silver certification level with one building achieving Platinum.

The other guidance document is defined by Executive Order 4 which defines Green Procurement for all New York State Agencies of which SUNY Cortland is part of.

SUNY Cortland has adopted sustainable design guidelines as defined by Executive Order (EO) 04, 18, and 88. The three orders focus on various aspects of the life cycle and the process of design and construction as well as maintenance and other specific performance metrics. EO4 (2008) focuses on core aspects of sustainable / green procuement. Based on guidence specifications related to this type of procuement, it has had an impact on design and maintenance. EO18 (2009) focuses on water conservation. EO88 (2012) focues on energy efficiency.
EO88 directs all state agencies, which SUNY Cortland is part of the SUNY agency, to reduce overall energy use intensity by 20% by 2020 when compared to the 2010-2011 baseline year. SUNY Cortland is approximately 14% of the way towards this goal with several projects under construction curretnly which will have an impact. EO18 effectively requires the elimination of bottled water. EO4 defines guidelines for carbon emissions and climate action planning as they related to buildings and operations.
A brief description of how the institution ensures compliance with green building design and construction guidelines and policies:
Both campus and the State University Construction Fund oversee any construction on the campus and an independent Commissioning Consultant are retained on the larger projects to assure compliance. The Certificate of Occupancy are held if is not in compliance.
