UNIVERSITY DESIGN MANUAL AND GUIDELINES
All University of Pittsburgh new construction and major renovation projects are built to high levels of green building standard as outlined in the University's Design Manual: https://www.fm.pitt.edu/design-manual.
Specifically, Division C of Pitt's Design Manual was significantly updated in October 2019, reflecting the University's range of sustainable design, construction, performance, and maintenance; at this time it was renamed "Division C: Architectural Design Guidelines for Sustainability, Products, and Materials," with sustainability both in its own section and embedded throughout. https://www.fm.pitt.edu/sites/default/files/pictures/Design_Manual/DiVISION_C_Divisions_02-14_Revised_20201210.docx.pdf. In Division C Section 018100, the University clearly states: “The University of Pittsburgh Project Design Sustainability Guidelines apply to all capital projects and are included in all Requests for Proposals issued for projects and referenced in contracts for professionals and construction managers,” then elucidating how Energy Use Intensity (EUI in kBTU/square foot/year), Water Use Intensity (WUI in gallons/square foot), and third-party green building rating system or certification goals are set for each project. Division C Section 018113 outlines some additional general sustainability design requirements for University of Pittsburgh projects, regardless of scale.
The University's energy and water performance guidelines and standards are provided in Division J (Mechanical) and K (Electrical) at the first link above. Division S is the University’s Sustainable Landscape Design Guidelines (last updated in 2018) and Division Y was created in 2019 to set “Guidelines for Restrooms, Showering Facilities, Locker Rooms and Lactation Rooms.”
