The Chancellor’s Advisory Council on Sustainability helps the University of Pittsburgh be a leader in balancing equity, environment, and economics so that current and future generations can thrive. The Council recognizes that sound sustainability practices, operations, infrastructure, curriculum, research, and partnerships benefit the institution, the Pittsburgh region, and the community at large. With representation from staff, faculty, and students across a variety of departments and expertise, the Council is commissioned to:

• Lead and educate by example by integrating sustainable practices into all areas of University operations, academics, research, and public service;
• Identify and support implementation of practices and standards that preserve and promote the stewardship and replenishment of energy, water, materials, and other resources;
• Strive towards increased social equity and access on-campus and in our communities; being respectful partners of renewal.
• Work to align our economic decision-making with ecological principles and human integrity, reflecting present-day and intergenerational equity so that we may regenerating life through networks of reciprocity.
• Engage faculty, students, and staff in sustainability exploration, including the development of meaningful curriculum, scholarly research, innovation, and outreach activities to inspire future generations to consider sustainability in all that they pursue;
• Promote and enhance the visibility of sustainability initiatives across campus and within the community at large through education, promotion, and action-oriented community partnerships; and
• Foster linkages among and within University departments for the purpose of advancing, achieving, innovating, collaborating, promoting, informing, and reporting on sustainability efforts.

The University of Pittsburgh's Office of Sustainability was established in July 2018 to centralize campus-wide sustainability activities, strategies, and partnerships.  Led by Director of Sustainability, Dr. Aurora Sharrard, the Office of Sustainability leads University-wide sustainability strategy, activities, policies, collaborations, & partnerships to advance the Pitt Sustainability Plan, which includes 61 measurable goals across stewardship, exploration, community, and culture.

The University's commitment to sustainable action is clear, with over 75 supporting staff members leading the charge across the campus and community.  The Office of Sustainability ensures milestone progress and accomplishments are shared across the Pitt community through two principal staff members and sustainability unit leads, staff, and collaborators embedded in 5 operational divisions and 3 academic centers (Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation, Center for Sustainable Business, and Pittsburgh Water Collaboratory). Along with contributing staff, students, and partners across the University, sustainability-affiliated faculty members collaborate through the Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation.

The Office of Sustainability's campus-wide efforts are also supported by over 20 paid student sustainability interns hosted in a wide variety of departments and business units; summer sustainability undergraduate research projects; and the 28+ student groups affiliated with the Student Office of Sustainability, who help infuse sustainability into the Pitt's culture, values, and decision-making.

Pitt's multilevel, interdisciplinary sustainability efforts on and off campus include the Chancellor's Advisory Council on Sustainability Committee and other associated committees, listed above.

Pitt is working to be a leader and innovator in sustainability, with a dedicated team in place to champion equitable, environmental, and economically balanced change, benefiting both people and the planet.

In 2018, the University of Pittsburgh hired its first Director of Sustainability, Dr. Aurora Sharrard, to head the centralized Office of Sustainability and lead University-wide sustainability strategy, activities, policies, collaborations, & partnerships to advance the Pitt Sustainability Plan, which includes 61 measurable goals across stewardship, exploration, community, and culture. Dr. Sharrard facilitates regular Pitt Sustainability staff meetings with our embedded and cross-departmental staff, Chairs the Chancellor’s Advisory Council on Sustainability, and holds membership in and/or regularly collaborates with all other campus faculty and staff sustainability committees.

Over the past 3 years, the Pitt Sustainability team itself, the Council, and every Committee except for MCSI’s Faculty Sustainability Task Force were either created and/or have undergone significant charter, structure, and/or membership changes.

Pitt’s Sustainability team has accomplished so much in the past 3 years, the space in this question is insufficient. Some very brief (and incomplete) highlights are below:

1) The University committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2037 (the year of Pitt’s 250th anniversary) in February 2020.
• Resultantly, the first Pitt Climate Action Plan is in development, with expectations of being completed in March 2021.
• We completed the FY17 & 19 greenhouse gas inventories [FY19 ~215,000 metric tons CO2e total; 21.1% below FY08].
• Alongside the United Nations’ Climate Action Summit, the University was one of the first universities to sign the Cool Food Pledge in a united global promise to cut food-related greenhouse gas emissions 25% by 2030 through sustainable food practices and food waste reduction.

2) Launched a new Pitt Sustainability Dashboard, which provides an interactive view of progress on select Pitt Sustainability Plan goals, including greenhouse gas emissions, compostables, food recovery, and Real Food Challenge achievements!
3) In FY20, Pitt achieved its lowest total energy use per square foot since data tracking began in 2008 (and 22% reduction in campus energy use since 2015), which keeps us on track to meet our internationally-aligned 2030 Challenge goal to reduce energy use per square foot 50% by 2030.
4) Pitt joined the U.S. EPA’s Top 30 Green Powered Colleges and Universities twice.
• 18% of the University’s energy originated from renewable energy sources in FY 2020.
• The University announced two power purchase agreements (PPA) for local, renewable power; these solar and local, low-impact hydropower commitments, have us projecting at least 36.5% of the Pittsburgh campus’ electricity will be supplied by renewables by 2024, keeping the University on track to reach its strategic goal of 50% of electricity produced or procured from renewable sources by 2030.

5) Pitt Green Events – Facilitated 153 events with composting in, including 48 Pitt Green and/or zero waste events during the 2019 Welcome Week alone, for nearly 14,000 students, family members, faculty, and staff. 2019 Welcome Week events collectively diverted over 9 tons of waste from the landfill. For comparison, 10 events were Green Certified and/or zero waste during the 2018 Welcome Week.
6) Compost – Diverted 176 tons of compostables from campus in FY 2020, reaching a new 12-month high.
7) Honored in 2018 for first time by The League of American Bicyclists with a Bronze Bicycle Friendly University (BFU) award in recognition of the institution’s achievements in promoting and enabling safe, accessible bicycling on campus.
8) Provided unlimited 30-minute Healthy Ride bike share access to Pitt students, staff and faculty, with over 7,000 trips taken in Fall 2020.
9) Received Pitt’s first ever Bee Campus USA designation (only the 5th bestowed on a Pennsylvania college or university)
10) In line with other 2018 Pitt Sustainability Plan goals, the University is advancing campus-wide basic needs conversations, responsible stormwater management and reuse planning, and vehicle electrification, while further embedding sustainability into our academic curriculum and research.
11) Recognized for sustainable building design and construction with 14 owned and operated LEED certified buildings.
12) Launched a textile recycling collection program at 20 campus locations to collect and recycle used textiles, diverting 7,866 textiles into the circular economy (equivalent to the amount of textiles 96 Americans throw away annually) in 2020 alone.
13) The University changed over its Dining provider to Compass, now offering Pitt Eats, with a renewed focus on all Pitt Sustainability Plan goals, including plant-forward dining, 50% reusable containers for meals and beverages by 2025, 25% Real Food campus-wide by 2025, and reducing food waste overall, while composting 50% of remaining food waste by 2025.
14) Adopted Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Policy that will guide investment decisions for endowment; first report expected by end of 2021.
15) Basic Needs – Established a Campus Basic Needs Committee established in order to understand, communicate, and advocate for students’ basic needs and create resources to ensure student success, while making the Meal Scholarship Program more robust to support short-term student emergency food assistance and connections to medium-term solutions
16) Created the Pitt Green suite of designations, including Pitt Green Offices, Laboratories, Residents, and Floors.
17) Launched Pitt EcoReps program launched to help fellow students live sustainably in residence halls.
18) Launched a Center for Sustainable Business, which itself launched “Sustaining Sustainability” podcast series, which explores sustainability lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic via 15-minute, weekly interviews with industry managers, academic experts, government officials, and civil society leaders.
19) Created a Sustainability Transcript Distinction for undergraduate students to recognize sustainability focus in & out of the classroom

This role will build upon existing successes to position the University of Pittsburgh as a leader in the field of Sustainability at the city, state, regional, national and international level by promoting broader awareness of the University’s environmental, social and financial sustainability successes and accomplishments.

The position will also provide leadership to the University Sustainability Committee [now Chancellor's Advisory Council on Sustainability], a cross-campus committee of internal champions promoting sustainability. The position will provide leadership for building and enhancing collaborative partnerships while supporting University-wide sustainability strategy, guidelines, and policy development in collaboration with stakeholders from across the University.

This position will be a key advocate on campus to enhance collaborative partnerships with Academics, Operations, Student Affairs, Athletics and other Campus groups as needed."

The University of Pittsburgh is seeking a Sustainability Manager to aid in the oversight and implementation of sustainability efforts for the units within Business and Auxiliary Services which include Housing, Dining, Panther Central, University Stores, Parking, Transportation and Mailing Services. Major responsibilities associated with this position include, but are not limited to: assisting with project coordination and food services initiatives; drafting policies and procedures; Pitt community outreach, strategic planning and research; supervision of student employees; and leadership in creating a departmental and campus-wide culture of sustainability. Other duties and special projects as assigned. This new role will:

• Assist in the oversight of sustainability efforts of campus Auxiliary Services as outlined in Pitt Sustainability Plan, including, but not limited to Waste Management & Minimization; Food Services; Energy and Water Conservation; Sustainable building and landscape design, operations, and maintenance; Procurement of green products
• Analyze current sustainability efforts and recommend improvements and opportunities.
• Assist in the development, coordination, and implementation of new sustainability efforts.
• Develop policies, procedures, and best practices regarding sustainability.

The new position of Sustainability Projects Coordinator will implement and assist in evolving a growing suite of Pitt sustainability programs focused on staff and faculty, including the Pitt Green Office and Laboratory program, green event efforts, and a zero waste mindset.

The Coordinator will also lead support coordinated, timely and effective flow of information across multiple communications channels and platforms across the university. This position reports to the Director of Sustainability. The incumbent will work closely with sustainability-focused and -related staff across the university including Auxiliaries, Student Affairs, Purchasing, Facilities, and Communications.

The Sustainability Projects Coordinator will be responsible for the implementation of primary pieces of the existing and evolving Pitt Green Program Suite (Office, Laboratories, Events, etc.), setting priorities, engaging with stakeholders, and meeting deadlines and goals.

The Coordinator will provide information, technical support, and informal mentoring to university faculty, staff, and students to build consistency, awareness, and understanding of campus-wide sustainability programs and culture. Coordinator will engage divisions, departments, offices, & laboratories about sustainability – and how to implement and maintain more sustainable actions, while creating and maintaining strong relationships with participating individuals and entities. Coordinator will work closely with Student Affairs, which oversees other Pitt Green Suite programs, including Green Resident, Green Floor, Green Dorm, Green Student Organization, and Green (Student) Events.

Coordinator will need to organize engagement events and presentations, while developing standard operating procedures and other written program guidelines. Coordinator also be responsible for collecting and reporting on programmatic metrics while documenting impact of the Pitt Green Suite programs.

The Sustainability Projects Coordinator will implement communications within the University about new and existing sustainability initiatives and accomplishments.

The Coordinator will hone existing Pitt Sustainability communications infrastructure and implement creative approaches for raising the visibility of university sustainability efforts internally and externally.

The Coordinator will work with Director of Sustainability, Business & Operations’ Director of Communications, University Communications Manager(s) to create and implement a communications plan for Pitt Sustainability, supporting efforts to build awareness and a culture of sustainability at the University of Pittsburgh.

The Coordinator will work with the network of university-wide sustainability professionals, HR, the Office of University Communications, and other units to provide regular and on-going updates and education targeted to both internal and external audiences. Coordinator will also answer primary Pitt Sustainability email address.

The Coordinator will author messaging for internal and external audiences and use relevant communications platforms, including the Sustainable.Pitt.edu website; Pitt Sustainability newsletter and social media; and associated analytics platforms to improve and grow communications.

Support and implement campus-wide zero waste aspirations and strategies, working closely with Facilities Management, Business & Auxiliaries, and others across campus. Works with faculty, staff, and students to promote, inform, and improve waste reduction practices in like with Pitt Sustainability Plan goals.

Special projects as determined by Director of Sustainability, including, but not limited to regular university-wide sustainability reporting for Office of Sustainability annual report, AASHE STARS, etc.
