Mission to Serve a Marginalized Population (3.0)

This is an optional Innovation & Leadership (IL) credit. IL credits recognize institutions that are seeking innovative solutions to sustainability challenges and demonstrating sustainability leadership in ways that are not otherwise captured in STARS. Scoring in the Innovation and Leadership section is capped at 10 bonus points total.

What types of organizational classifications qualify?

The following institution classifications may be referenced under this credit:

  • Aboriginal college 
  • Historically Black College or University (HBCU)
  • First Nations university
  • Tribal College or University (TCU)
  • Wānanga
  • An international equivalent

Suggestions for Institutions

  • Refer to national or international databases to determine whether a mission to serve a marginalized racial, ethnic, or Indigenous population is in place.

Potential Data Quality Issues

  • Documentation on a purpose or mission to serve a specific marginalized racial, ethnic, or Indigenous population is required. 
  • Recognition as a minority-serving institution or the equivalent based on enrollment figures is not sufficient (and is recognized elsewhere).
