What is payment in lieu of taxes (PILOT)?
This term refers to voluntary payments made by tax-exempt organizations to contribute toward the cost of the public services they consume.
Suggestions for Institutions
- Work with your institution’s community and/or government relations office(s) or similar to determine whether PILOT compensation is already offered, and/or to consider implementing such compensation.
Potential Data Quality Issues
- There must be evidence that the institution participates in payment in lieu of taxes (PILOT), or an equivalent program designed to compensate local authorities for public funds lost due to tax exempt status.
