Does the institution have an ongoing program that offers incentives for academic staff in multiple disciplines or departments to develop new sustainability courses and/or incorporate sustainability into existing courses? :
A brief description of the incentive program(s):
The S&EJ initiative is designed to increase faculty engagement with sustainability and environmental justice in the curriculum and facilitate integration of these topics into existing courses. This across-the-curriculum approach has proven effective to foster a culture of sustainability at dozens of colleges and universities.
Wesleyan's program began in 2016 with a workshop/seminar series and now includes faculty gatherings and an annual request for proposals to integrate sustainability into the curriculum; those faculty whose proposals are chosen are awarded an honorarium.
A brief description of the incentives that academic staff who participate in the program(s) receive:
- An honorarium of $500 is offered to faculty who integrate sustainability and environmental justice in one unit or module of their course.
- An honorarium of up to $1000 is offered to faculty who integrate sustainability and environmental justice throughout the course.
2022 Priority Areas
- Proposals that amend existing courses to include a new focus on sustainability and environmental justice
- Proposals from faculty and departments that do not typically include a focus on sustainability and environmental justice, especially those in the natural and mathematical sciences (Division 3) and arts and humanities (Division 1)
- Proposals for courses that have higher student enrollments
