A brief description of the open access policy, including the date adopted, any incentives or supports provided, and the repository(ies) used:

Adopted 10/20/2010, ASU Librarians Assembly grants a non-exclusive license to the libraries to deposit scholarly works in the ASU Digital Repository.

There are currently three primary memberships that ASU has that provide financial incentive for open access:

PeerJ

PeerJ is an open access journal publishing articles in the biological, medical, and health sciences. PeerJ Computer Science is a cross-disciplinary open access journal publishing articles across all fields of computer science. Our membership provides ASU authors with a basic lifetime membership to PeerJ and PeerJ Computer Science upon acceptance of a submitted paper.

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS)

ASU has a current site license agreement with PNAS, which grants corresponding authors from ASU a discounted open access fee of $1000.

Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC): Gold for Gold voucher program

The Gold for Gold program has ceased as of 2017. However, ASU Library has a set number of voucher codes that can be used for articles accepted in 2016 until March 31, 2017. Voucher codes can be used to publish a communication, full paper, review, or technical note in an RSC journal under the publisher’s Gold OA option.

Additionally, ASU has dedicated staff, Anali Perry, who is among other things, charged with promoting open access, developing an improved open access policy, and encouraging open access participation.

The institution's open access policy:

We, the Librarians Assembly of Arizona State University Libraries, resolve the following:

To disseminate our scholarship as broadly as possible. We endeavor to make our scholarly work openly accessible in conformance with open access principles.

Whenever possible, we make our scholarship available in digital format, online, and free of charge.

To grant ASU Libraries a Creative Commons "Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 United States" license to each of our scholarly works to allow the ASU
Libraries the right to archive and make publicly available the full text of our scholarly works via the ASU Libraries' digital repository.

To deposit the author's final version of our scholarly work in the digital repository as soon as is possible, recognizing that some publishers may impose an embargo period.
To seek publishers whose policies allow us to make our scholarly works freely available online. When a publisher’s policies do not allow us to make our works freely available online, we resolve to engage in good faith negotiations with the publisher to allow deposit of pre- or post-print versions of our scholarly work in the digital repository.

To promote Open Access on campus and assist scholars in making their research openly available.

The resolution applies to the scholarly works authored and co-authored while employed at ASU Libraries, beginning with works submitted for publication after October 20, 2010. The works encompassed by this resolution include journal articles and scholarly proceedings. We encourage the deposit of other scholarly work as defined by Librarians Assembly.
