Auburn University is installing a wireless meter reading system to provide hourly usage data from all water meters. We will use this information to generate reports to better manage building usage as well as to find potential existing problems.
This information will be shared with Landscape Services to provide details about areas that waste water. Examples are: identified leaks, watering during improper times of day, and watering during or immediately following rain events.
Facilities staff constantly examine central cooling plants to look for ways to optimize the blow downs associated with this equipment. Auburn University received an award from GE last year for efforts in this area.
Facilities is in the process of metering all closed loop makeup systems on campus and linking them to the wireless system. This will enable Facilities to know when leaks develop within the system or when associated equipment malfunctions and dumps water into the sewer.
