We have several student groups focused on sustainability. The groups include: Mines Green Team, EarthWorks, Minenergy, and Environmental Justice club. More details are available at: https://www.mines.edu/sustainability/sustainability-focused-student-organizations/

Yes

EarthWorks manages our community garden project located in the City of Golden.

Yes

A brief description of the student-run enterprises:

The Book & Brew in the library is a student-run enterprise that includes sustainability as part of its mission statement. They purchase coffee from sustainable sources and provide compostable cups, paper straws, etc. They also gives discounts for bringing your own mug. See https://library.mines.edu/bookandbrew/

Yes

A brief description of the sustainable investment funds, green revolving funds or sustainable microfinance initiatives:

We have a Green Fund that funds student sustainability projects. Students submit an application to our Green Fund Committee, which is made up of faculty, staff, and students.

Yes

The Payne Institute hosted Amory Lovins for a large speaker series event. https://calendar.mines.edu/event/3317/

We also hosted an EarthDay Fair with faculty speaking on Climate Change and a Sustainability Ted Talks series where students present to other students on topics such as veganism, wind energy, and more.

Yes

A brief description of the cultural arts events, installations, or performances focused on sustainability:

In 2019, we hosted an Earth Day Fair with exhibits (see https://www.mines.edu/sustainability/earth-day-fair/). We also hosted educational tables during Campus Sustainability Month to educate students about water usage in manufacturing, plastic waste, etc.

The Outdoor Recreation Center hosts multiple outdoors and wilderness programs throughout the year, including trips to international wilderness locations. Leave No Trace principles are encouraged.

Our People Power Planet educational program educates students about sustainable lifeskills. The primary focus is on energy and water conservation, but we also talks about waste reduction through recycling and composting, and how to make their dorm rooms more sustainable. We also have a green dorm guide.

The Sustainability Office hires paid interns to assist with sustainability programs. These are year-long internships. We currently have 3 students employed part-time for the Sustainability Office.
