A brief description of the institution’s main campus and other aspects of the institutional boundary used to complete this report:
The Colorado School of Mines located in Golden, Colorado is one of the top-rated Science and Engineering Schools in the country[1] with faculty that are both world-renowned researchers and accessible.[2] Further, the Department of Chemistry annually hosts the American Chemical Society Green Chemistry and Sustainability Summer School.[3] Additionally, the front-range of the Rocky Mountains is a unique ecosystem of research activity with 33 national laboratories (one of the highest concentrations in the country)[4] including the National Renewable Energy Laboratory-NREL (~2 mile from campus), US Geological Survey-USGS (on-campus) and National Institute of Standards and Technologies –NIST (~18 miles) that have extensive interactions with Mines including, shared facilities, joint appointments, joint projects and co-advised students.
Colorado School of Mines, also referred to as "Mines" has a total enrollment of approximately 6,268 undergraduate, graduate, and non-degree students, its setting is suburban, and the campus size is approximately 500 acres in downtown Golden. Although Mines does have a few research labs in other locations (e.g., the Federal Center in Denver), this report applies only to the main campus situated in downtown Golden, CO.

The rationale for excluding any features that are present from the institutional boundary:
Mines rents lab space at the Federal Center which rents space to a variety of clients. Their sustainability is not managed by this campus. The same rationale is true for labs partnerships with other universities or national laboratories. The operation of those facilities is not managed by Mines.

The School of Mines was originally founded as a mining college. It now has become more of a STEM school, with the highest student enrollment in mechanical engineering. It recently added "space mining" to its degree programs.
