A brief description of the certificate program:

IIT Galvin Center for Electricity Innovation has received from both the U.S. Department of Energy and State of Illinois to develop continuing education and training programs in smart grid technology and wind energy. These broad-based education and training programs will include a number of certificate programs in both areas.

Certificate Program in Wind Energy
In 2010, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) awarded Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) Galvin Center for Electricity Innovation a competitive, $9 million grant to create a University-Industry Consortium for Wind Energy Research, Education, and Workforce Development. The consortium’s research and development objectives focus on addressing several challenges identified in the DOE’s “20% Wind Energy by 2030” report. IIT’s grant was one of 3 awarded by the DOE nationally for wind energy research. The Wind Consortium has a diverse pool of public and private members working together to improve wind power reliability and performance, lower the price of wind energy, encourage greater integration into the utility grid, and build an educated workforce to drive the industry.

Certificate Program in Smart Grid
In 2010, the IIT Galvin Center for Electricity Innovation leadership initiated a $12.6 million project, supported by the Department of Energy and the State of Illinois, to educate and train the nation’s workforce to meet the global challenges and opportunities of the smart grid. The IIT Galvin Center for Electricity Innovation will oversee the operations of this initiative.
