A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:

A team of Middlebury Students is the first team from a liberal arts college ever to be selected to compete in the Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon competition. The competition asks teams to design and build solar-powered houses that feature cost-effective, energy-efficient construction and incorporate energy-saving appliances and renewable energy systems. Despite the fact that Middlebury does not have an engineering program, these students have shown that their well-rounded and interdisciplinary education has given them the tools they need to succeed in this endeavor. The team has proposed to design and build a house for the Vermont climate that combines the best aspects of a traditional New England farmhouse with the efficient technologies of today. Inspired by the self-reliant nature of the traditional New England farm house and associated lifestyle, the team’s mission statement concludes with, “By combining past paradigms with current technologies, we will design and build a home that exemplifies a truly comprehensive view of sustainability - a New England farmhouse for the 21st century.”
