Middlebury College is very proud to provide a wage scale that is very competitive in our identified job market. We participate in salary surveys on a regular basis, and for staff our goal is to have our jobs pay, on average, at the 80th percentile of the labor market. Our compensation structure is built around these market targets. We also have a very generous benefit program that, on average - for benefit-eligible employees (1/2 time or more) – adds an additional 35% to the College’s cost of labor. Many of our employee benefits (life, EFAP, and disability) are 100% employer-paid, and while employees do pay a portion of the medical and dental premiums, the employee share is calculated on an income-sensitive basis with the lower-paid employees receiving the largest employer-subsidy. The College participates in salary surveys every year and makes spot adjustments as necessary. In the past three years, we have not passed along any cost increases to employees on their benefits premiums, which are highly income sensitive such that the lower wager earner pay disproportionately less for the same high quality coverage as higher wager earner. The benefits plan also includes maximum amounts that employees would have to pay for prescription drugs in a year. Additionally we have a system of safety nets in place in case of unexpected financial emergencies that employees might face. We regularly gather information informally regarding wages at the college and are instituting a more formal and regular satisfaction evaluation process.
