In February 2022, the Sustainability Office worked with the Institutional Analysis and Planning department to develop a survey for all staff and students to assess sustainability culture and literacy. The Sustainability Office regularly surveys staff and students, however until this survey only staff were asked sustainability literacy questions. To develop the survey, we took questions from past surveys and looked at surveys from other institutions.
A brief description of how a representative sample was reached (if applicable) and how the assessment(s) were administered :
Invitations to participate were sent to every active student email, and follow up reminders were sent before the survey closed. To help encourage participation, the survey was also promoted in college-wide student e-news and a message was sent to all staff and faculty encouraging their participation and asking them to encourage student participation. Students who participated were also given the opportunity to enter a draw for one of three $50 gift cards from the Campus Store. We received responses for 1,102 responses from students across the college.

Some of the results included:
- 31% of students successfully identified economic, environmental and social, as the three main component of sustainability while 52% of students selected reduce, reuse, recycle.
- Most students could successfully define a life cycle analysis (68%); define the concept of Zero Waste (77%); and identify the food with the highest carbon footprint (67%).
- 32% of students knew how many calls to action there were in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada report (94)
- Most students (68%) were able to identify at least one example of social sustainability, however only a few (less than 10%) were able to identify all the examples given.
