Does the institution use recycled content napkins in its dining service operations?:
A brief description of the purchasing behavior:
Food Services uses recycled content napkins, which are also composted on campus so they do not have to hit the waste stream. In addition, at all Food Service outlets, with the exception of soup bowls and cold cups, all single use items are fully biodegradable. This includes hot beverage cups, napkins, plates, forks, knives, clear dome containers, and hinged hot food take away containers. China, cutlery and glassware are provided at Totem and Place Vanier’s Dining Rooms, Pacific Spirit Place, Sage Bistro and UBC Catering, thereby reducing the usage of single use disposable ware. http://www.food.ubc.ca/sustainability/sustainability-initiatives
All napkins at AMS Food and Beverage outlets are made from post-consumer recycled material. The compostable food container program is being expanded to include an additional smaller sized container and soup bowls. UBC Food Services and the AMS are currently working on proper messaging in order to encourage the recycling of plastic cutlery. http://www.food.ubc.ca/sustainability/sustainability-initiatives
