Campus Race to Zero Waste

A brief description of the campaign:

Campus Race to Zero Waste is the perfect opportunity to reach out to the whole student body. The 2 month competition allows us to introduce students to the concepts of waste diversion, contamination of recyclables, re purposing, reusing, upcycling and recycling.

The impact of CRZW has been felt throughout: ECO reps were in charge of developing educational campaigns that lead to an increase in recycling diversion rate overall.

ECO Pledge

A brief description of the campaign (2nd campaign):

In the last 3 years, all faculty, staff, alumni and returning students were invited to take the ECO pledge. The Covid 19 pandemic has taught us new ways to be more mindful of our individual ecofootprint and pledge takers were invited to share their experience on Facebook and Instagram.


A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):

More than 1500 staff, faculty and students have taken the pledge.
The survey allowed us to assess the needs, the knowledge and future adaptation strategies to promote sustainability throughout the UM community.


A brief description of other sustainability-related outreach campaigns:

Through partnership with the Student Government ECO Agency, UM promotes a Green Event Certification that focuses on waste reduction, plant based menus, and disposable plastic free.
