The Green Initiative Competition was launched by the Student Government ECO Agency to incentivize sustainability innovation among students. The prizes are funded by ECO. In 2008, UM students decided to increase the student fee and allocate a portion of it to sustainability education and projects through the SG ECO Agency.

The winners of the competition have to send a full application package to the GIC jury. The jury is comprised of SG ECO Agency leaders, students, faculty and staff.
