UNH offers a wide variety of sustainability-related continuing education (workshops, courses, conferences, and other in-person or virtual learning) in everything from forestry master gardening to starting a sustainability business to agriculture and beyond.
Most courses are offered through UNH Cooperative Extension (http://extension.unh.edu/), though courses are also offered through UNH Professional Development and Training, colleges and departments across campus (such as the Executive Education Program at the Peter T. Paul College of Business and Economics), and elsewhere.
UNH Continuing Education
The attached list represents 109 different non-formal educational programs that relate to sustainability, climate adaptation and natural resource stewardship.
Volunteer Training - Training held annually – consisting of several weeks of focused workshops, preparing volunteers to work in their community and to teach others about stewardship, best practices in land and water conservation and marine science. More than 2,500 volunteers are actively working in these areas on behalf on UNH Cooperative Extension in almost all communities across the state.

Invasive Species – Workshops designed to help landowners understand how to detect and limit the spread of invasive insects and plan species in NH. Invasive species can: reduce biodiversity; imperil rare species; reduce wildlife habitat by eliminating native foods, altering cover and destroying nesting sites; degrade water quality; reduce forest and agricultural crop production; and cause health problems.
Saving Special Places – communities and conservation groups learn about a variety of land conservation, wildlife, forestry, farmland, conservation funding and stewardship issues. Project Partners: Society for the Protection of NH Forests, The Nature Conservancy, LCHIP and NRCS.
2013-2017 Climate Summits - current climate research and local adaptation strategies. Project partners: Great Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, NH Coastal Adaptation Workgroup
Water, Weather, Climate and Community workshop series – communities learn about climate adaptation strategies. Project partners: NH Coastal Adaptation Workgroup.
Communities Taking Action for Wildlife Program. Direct work with communities providing technical assistance for incorporating wildlife considerations into town documents Project partners: NH Fish and Game Department.
Method for Inventorying and Evaluating Freshwater Wetlands In New training sessions - communities learned about and developed skills in wetland evaluation Project Partners: NH Method Workgroup.
NH Fresh and Local Seafood Kickoff – promotion of local seafood – where to purchase and how to prepare. Project Partners: Red Hook Brewery, five local Restaurant partners, and Prescott Park Arts Festival organizers – Fishtival.
Annual spring lobster trap cleanup on the Seacoast and removed 21 tons of derelict fishing gear from NH beaches. Project Partners: NH Commercial Fisherman’s Association, Blue Ocean Society, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, NH Fish and Game.
Barry Conservation Camp - operated by the UNH Cooperative Extension 4-H Program in cooperation with the NH Department of Fish and Game. 4-H Barry Conservation Camp is a great program for kids who love the outdoors, enjoy hands-on learning in environmental and conservation programs and can benefit from participating in a small camp. Six sessions are held each summer.
Local events held at counties – too numerous to list all in a year, but more than 100 workshops and field days – highlighting good forest stewardship practices, protecting the environment against invasive species, sustaining wildlife habitat and land conservation, promoting local foods/farmers markets, engaging youth with the outdoors, climate adaptation, wetland classification, sustainable timber harvesting, etc.

Permaculture Design Certificate
The Permaculture Design Certificate program is for homesteaders, landscapers, natural resource managers & stewards, naturalists, master gardeners, farmers, members of Central NH and Seacoast Permaculture Meet-up Groups, foresters, environmentalists or anyone interested in increasing their awareness of the necessity of living in harmony with nature while redefining individual definitions of ‘enough’ and exploring the benefits of a deeper sense of resiliency through permaculture practices and principles. Certification requires completion of 3 online courses: Foundation of Permaculture; Social Permaculture: The Art of Building Community & Relationships, and Design.

Supervisory Pesticide Applicator Registration Certificate
UNH Cooperative Extension will host a series of all-day training workshops in September 2017 for those seeking a supervisory registration certificate - general use from the state’s Division of Pesticide Control. Individuals wishing to obtain this certification need to participate in a series of training classes, pass a written and oral exam, and show proof of insurance.

Our new Stormwater Management Certificate includes 3 one-day core workshops and 2 one-day electives that can be completed over a 12-month period. Certificate topics include stormwater management overview, regulations, BMP design, permitting, water quality, construction site runoff and other related areas of stormwater management. This certificate is designed for landscape architects, engineers, surveyors, project managers and others involved in designing, building and maintaining stormwater management systems.

Food, Nutrition and Health
Food and nutrition have a profound impact on our health and well-being, yet many of us are not aware of what foods to eat, which diets are healthy, and where our food originates. The goal of this certificate program is to provide a holistic overview of current food and nutrition issues and their impact on physical, social, emotional, and spiritual health.

Certificate in Community Development Finance
The Fundamentals of the Opportunity Finance Industry course is designed for practitioners who are interested in expanding their knowledge of the basics of the opportunity finance industry which provides financing and financial services to low-income, low-wealth, and other disadvantaged people and communities. This three-day course is jointly offered by the Carsey School of Public Policy at the University of New Hampshire and Opportunity Finance Network.
Also, in 2011, UNH and NH Businesses for Social Responsibility developed the Corporate Sustainability Leadership Program and Certificate (www.sustainablitycertificate.org). Managers, business leaders, and others in NH and beyond can take the program to learn about business and sustainability.
