A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
UO's Green Chemistry program seeks to reduce the impacts of chemicals on human health and the environment while maximizing the performance and societal benefit of chemical products. This program's efforts include green chemistry curriculum, research programs, a database of educational materials, a workshop on incorporating green chemistry into the undergraduate curriculum and a textbook on Greener Organic Chemistry.
This program is innovative in numerous ways. The UO was one of the pioneers in greening chemistry curriculum at universities and has emerged as the world leader in this field. A few examples of its firsts are as follows:
1) It created the first comprehensive green chemistry curricula for general and organic laboratory courses.
2) It wrote the first undergraduate green chemistry textbook (Green Organic Chemistry: Strategies, Tools and Laboratory Experiments authored by UO faculty Kenneth Doxsee and James Hutchison).
3) It set up the first laboratory space designed for green chemistry.
4) It created the first outreach program that catalyzes the efforts of faculty around the world to implement our green chemistry curriculum at their institutions.
5) It designed the first on-line resource of green chemistry educational materials for chemists.
