A brief description of steps taken to ensure that e-waste is recycled responsibly, workers’ basic safety is protected, and environmental standards are met:

Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) manages the e-waste recycling program as part of our hazardous materials management program. All e-waste that is recycled goes only to permitted facilities that recycle waste within the United States. EHS receives and verifies certificates of recycling for all electronic waste that is shipped.


A brief description of the electronic waste recycling program for institution-generated materials:

Working electronics are sold at public auction through Surplus Property according to state regulations. Non-working or valueless electronics are collected by Environmental, Health and Safety for recycling. Virginia Tech recycled over 32 tons of electronic waste in 2010.


A brief description of the electronic waste recycling program for student-generated materials :

Virginia Tech will accept electronic waste from students for recycling. Electronic wastes are accepted from students during the end of semester move outs or if the student requests assistance with the disposal of electronic wastes.
