A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome :

IN-1: "Virginia Tech Bicycle Ambassador Program"

The mission of the Virginia Tech Bicycle Ambassador Program is to encourage the responsible use of bicycles for transportation among students, faculty, and staff by educating new and experienced cyclists on safe, law-abiding behavior and providing resources for creating a respectful and vibrant bicycle culture on campus.

The Bicycle Ambassador Program is comprised of student volunteers who serve 3-5 hours per week and attend monthly meetings with the Alternative Transportation Coordinator. At the beginning of their term, ambassadors are required to attend a smart cycling workshop and a bicycle maintenance class. Ambassador duties include educating students, faculty, and staff on bicycle safety techniques, assisting students with basic bicycle repair, providing students with information on campus bicycling policies, volunteering at Alternative Transportation sponsored events, and planning bicycle-related social and educational events for students. Although projects and events vary each semester, during the 2012-13 Academic Year Ambassadors have hosted Bicycle Tune-Up Socials, Bike Registration Drives, evening social rides, a Bike-Themed Movie Night, and Bicycle Prom.
