A brief description of the sustainable operations and maintenance policy/program and/or O+M rating system(s) used:

Whitman College adopted a temperature set point policy in 2017: The set point policy has maintained most existing building heating temperatures at 70F and adjusted cooling set point temperatures to 76F. In implementing this policy, all spaces will be maintained as close to the set point as possible. Due to variance in building systems and their respective capabilities there may be some variance in temperature at the room level.

The Hall of Science features an award-winning heating and cooling system.

The $10 million construction of the fitness center and swimming pool in 2004 included a heat recovery system that recaptures and recycles the warm water vapor that rises off the swimming pool. After running through an evaporator, the water and latent heat are extracted and used to heat the pool.

The large south-facing windows of Reid Campus Center allow sunlight to enter in the winter, naturally warming the building. Programmed vents open and close to outside air to capitalize on natural convection techniques for cooling.

The February 2020 LED lighting retrofit of Penrose Library is expected to reduce the building’s lighting system energy consumption by 50%, saving over 500,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.
