Health Promotion and Advocacy (HPA) and the Center for Survivor Support (CSS) contribute to student success through promoting and educating about healthier behaviors and providing support, resources and services to students impacted by gender-based violence. Beginning fall 2021, HPA and CSS have educated and trained student volunteers through the Peer Wellness Ambassadors (PWA) program which promotes health and wellness education by actively striving to empower fellow students, facilitating informed decision making, encouraging health and safety, and providing a destigmatized environment for self-improvement. The program’s vision is to bridge the health (in)equity gap with evidence-based education to build a connected, intersectional, and inclusive community. Inspired by the NASPA Certified Peer Educator training, student volunteers complete a 7-hour training to join the Peer Wellness Ambassadors (PWA) program and learn about topics such as the 9 Dimensions of Wellness; substance misuse; mental health; sex education; consent; healthy relationships; violence prevention; bystander intervention; stalking; environmental wellness; diet and exercise; stress and time management; sleep; and public health initiatives. PWAs gain valuable experience by designing, coordinating, and conducting a variety of education programs that serve all enrolled students through events, tabling, newsletters, social media, classroom and residence hall presentations, passive programming, and collaborations with other student organizations. Students from any major(s) are welcome to participate in the program and are required to attend weekly training meetings and volunteer at least 10 hours per semester. In 2022, the program consisted of 15 students and was co-supervised by the Victim Advocate and Health and Wellness Coordinator in the department.

All students enrolled at the university. The programming is made available for all to participate. From August 2022-May 2023 PWA hosted 60 events open to all students.
