After more than 20 years of sustained effort, Bates College was able to hit its goal of carbon neutrality one year early in 2019, joining a group of only a handful of schools to accomplish this nationwide. Bates was able to acheive this goal primarily through energy efficiency, switching to renewables in our central steam plant, and fostering a culture of sustainability in our community.

The Bates College sustainability Roadmap, endorsed by our board in 2022, is patterned after the AASHHE STARS report, and sets extremely ambitious goals for this decade in the areas of Climate, Academics, Operations, Culture, and Governance.
