The Energy Policy Institute at Boise State University conducted a short survey in Spring 2020 to understand perspectives about campus sustainability and energy use. To support estimates of the Boise State University greenhouse gas emissions, the survey also included questions about the form of transportation used to travel to campus and frequency of travel to campus. The sample was developed by the Office of Institutional Research. The survey was distributed to a sample of students estimated to provide an acceptable margin of error, with oversampling by design done in programs with anticipated interest in energy issues. Additionally, the survey was distributed to all faculty and staff with the exception of student workers and a small number of administrative staff working closely on responses to the coronavirus pandemic. The survey received 849 responses corresponding to a 3.3% margin of error with a 95% confidence interval.
This survey included questions primarily gauging interest and behavior around energy and transportation, with additional questions asking specifically about the importance of different aspects of sustainability (energy conservation, clean energy, recycling, composting, food waste, water conservation) as well as interest in employment sectors.

This survey was not necessarily a representative sample of the campus as a whole as by design we oversampled areas where student interest in energy-sustainability was likely, in order to gain a better understanding of their preferences

This survey was intended for internal use versus external reporting, and the results supported planning for classes and to understand commute practices as well as the importance of energy conservation and sustainable transportation options.
