Boise State Uniting for Inclusion and Leadership in Diversity

A brief description of the employee educators program (1st program):

“The BUILD Campus Forum Initiative, supported with funds from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, will build capacity and commitment towards fostering a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive Boise State University. This initiative offers programs to support participants to consider their own thinking and perspectives on diversity and inclusion and catalyze individual and collective movement toward Boise State’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. We hope to interrupt relations and conditions of inequity by enabling people to identify, name, and challenge the norms, practices, patterns, and structures that keep systems of oppression in place.”
Employee educators are trained by an external consultant, Sharon Washington. Washington uses the text Facilitating Intergroup Dialogues: Bridging Differences, Catalyzing Change, Edited by Kelly E. Maxwell, Riren (Ratnesh) A. Nagda, and Monita C. Thompson (2011) to guide the training which takes place over 12 hours. Additionally, prior to conducting a BUILD dialogue workshop, the trained employee educators spend 4 hours planning for the dialogue topic. Each dialogue consists of 15 Boise State University employees and 2 trained educators. The educators guide the conversation while participants actively discuss and challenge their understanding of social identities, viewpoints, and experiences while expanding their exposure to opposing or differing identities and viewpoints
