Three staff members in the college Student Empowerment Center coordinate the institution's participation in the TRIO program including student support, outreach, and supervision.


A brief description of the institution’s policies and programs to minimize the cost of attendance for low-income students?:

The Financial Aid Office administers a variety of aid programs that help students reach their educational goals. Financial aid is available in the form of scholarships, grants, loans and work-study. Nearly 7,000 students applied for financial assistance at CLC in 2009-10. In 2004-05, the office disbursed almost $7 million of federal, state and private funds to eligible students, with over $2.9 million in refunds directly paid to students.


A brief description of the institution’s programs to equip the institution's faculty and staff to better serve students from low-income backgrounds:

The college offers several workshops through our Professional Development Center on serving diverse student populations and focusing on student success, retention, and multi-generational students. As a community college, affordability and accessibility are inherent throughout our mission. Our Institutional Overview workshop for all new employees stresses this mission and supporting low-income students.


A brief description of the institution’s programs to prepare students from low-income backgrounds for higher education:

The college has an extensive College Readiness program for students of all ages and backgrounds to begin to prepare for higher education. The goal is to help smooth students' transition to college-level coursework by defining "college readiness," promoting communication between the College of Lake County and its key stakeholders (parents, Lake County school districts and students) regarding college readiness expectations and to assist students in becoming "college ready" at the College of Lake County.

The College of Lake County Foundation raises money to fund eight major award programs. The Diversity, Leadership in Student Activities, Leadership in Performing Arts/Literary Arts, Academic Achievement, Career, General Education, English as a Second Language, and Returning to Education scholarships are offered each fall and spring term.

The College Readiness program works to make strong connections with parents before and throughout the higher education experience.
