Sustainability Interns help advance sustainability initiatives across campus. They are trained with informational presentations and eased into their structured and guided work. Duties include but are not limited to developing content about sustainability initiatives on campus for social media platforms as well as on the sustainability webpage, engagement across campus and the community, and involvement in initiatives like sustainable dining, waste management & campus composting, and climate action, stakeholder analysis, and more projects catered to an individual intern's interest.

The current responsibilities/description for CCSJ’s Sustainability Program Intern are:
-Organize and promote one-time and/or occasional service opportunities pertaining to sustainability for the campus community.
-Oversee the Forever-Green Thrift Store once per semester.
-Support collaborative efforts between CCSJ + York Road Initiative (YRI) and the Office of Sustainability.
-Oversee CCSJ + YRI office sustainability efforts in coordination with the Office Manager Intern.
-Connect Loyola students to support the needs of community organizations and advocate for justice issues related to sustainability and environmental racism.
All CCSJ interns, including the Sustainability Program Coordinator, must take part in a two-week training during August which includes topics such as anti-racism and racial justice formation, internship and career readiness, outreach and recruitment practices, engaged citizenship and leadership, York Road Corridor historical and current day realities in relation to justice, community building, Title IX and bystander intervention, and role-specific duties. Throughout the year, they also have monthly training sessions that focus on a variety of topics including Catholic Social Teaching, advocacy, and continued anti-racism and racial justice formation.
A brief description of the student educators program’s target audience (2nd program):
The Center for Community, Service, and Justice's (CCSJ's) Sustainability Program Coordinator puts on multiple events throughout the academic year that involve and cater to all students. For example, they organize the biannual Forever-Green Thrift Store, which occurs once a semester. The event involves collecting clothing from students, faculty, staff, and administrators, sorting it, and selling it at a thrift store, with the funds going to a local environmental organization. The Sustainability Program Coordinator is also involved in innovating educational content regarding sustainability and/or putting on advocacy-related events. The overwhelming majority of initiatives managed by the Sustainability Program Coordinator for Loyola's Center for Community, Service, and Justice are catered towards and apply to all students--at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

This intern will work together with the Assistant Director for Social Justice and the Social Justice & Advocacy Intern to plan and implement opportunities to engage the Loyola community through education, prayer, reflection, and action. These positions seek to deepen the connections between faith and justice, which are understood more fully through community engagement, relationship building, and experiential learning within our local, national, and global communities. While this role focuses on environmental justice, it will also require recognizing the intersections between a variety of social justice topics, including antiracism/racial justice, immigration justice, economic justice, voting rights, and more. Applicants do not need to be “experts” in social justice issues but must have passion for the intersections of faith and justice work and openness to continuous growth and learning.
Campus Ministry interns undergo a multi-day office-specific training and participate in regular racial justice training with the rest of the Campus Ministry team throughout the academic year.
Responsibilities
-Provide administrative support for retreats (open to all Loyola Students) run by the Assistant Director for Social Justice in the Spring semester
-Coordinate justice and education-action programs such as follow-up Teach-in and immersion initiatives
-Support our campus-wide commitment to being a Laudato Si University through committed ongoing partnerships with multiple Loyola departments
-Assist in recruitment, planning, and preparation for various sustainability-focused programs, including facilitating advocacy initiatives put out by the Ignatian Solidarity Network and other partner organizations
-Lead efforts for education, advocacy, and coordinated response on current legislative issues
-Collaborate with student clubs and groups, including ALANA, CCSJ/YRI, the Office of Sustainability, and others to support relationships and coordinate joint justice education and action efforts.
-Support networking and collaboration with other Jesuit institutions, community partners, and social action organizations.
-Develop creative and engaging messaging through campus campaigns, videos, and social media to promote social justice education, action, and reflection throughout the semester.
-Work together as a team with the Social Justice & Advocacy Intern to accomplish some of the responsibilities above.
-Other duties as assigned.
A brief description of the student educators program’s target audience (3rd program):
All events and programs put on by this position are open and advertised to all Loyola students, including celebrations of St. Francis's feast day, Laudato Si programming, legislative advocacy efforts & initiatives, and retreats. Students from all backgrounds, faith traditions, and spiritualities are welcome to Campus Ministry programming, including retreats. While specific retreats offered by Campus Ministry are only open to undergraduate students, the Campus Ministry Sustainability Intern is not involved in those retreats.
