For Fall Welcome Weekend 2023, the Office of Sustainability hosted three different Department Open House Sessions for students. First-year and transfer students choose which three they would like to attend. In this session, students learned about what resources Loyola's Office of Sustainability offers, events put on throughout the year, and Loyola's Laudato Si commitment. The session emphasized integral ecology, intersectional environmentalism, and the concept that sustainability at Loyola is not reserved for students who wish to go into a sustainability-related field, but for all students.
Throughout Fall Welcome Weekend, Loyola University Maryland's commitment to sustainability will be visible through our waste, recycling, and compost signage.
Incoming first-year students attended Loyola's annual Common Text panel. Loyola's Common Text for 2023 is "What the Eyes Don't See" which focuses on sustainability and environmental justice. This panel was mandatory for first-year students. More programming related to the Common Text is offered throughout the academic year for all students.
At one point in the weekend, all students had a conversation about sustainability in their small groups facilitated by their non-first-year student mentor. This conversation touched on important things students should know about sustainability at Loyola (proper recycling practices, how to get involved/learn more, etc.)

Fall Welcome Weekend is a time right before the Fall Semester starts where first year and transfer students come to campus, attend numerous information sessions, social events, and (for incoming first-years) small group meetings with students they will have a class with in the Fall and Spring Semester. Unlike our Summer Orientation, Fall Welcome Weekend is mandatory to all first-year and transfer students.
