All construction at Northwestern is guided by our sustainable building and renovation policy, as well as technical design standards that meet our sustainability goals. The policy states that Northwestern will pursue LEED Gold or Platinum for new construction and will evaluate the feasibility of LEED NC or LEED for Commercial Interiors for major renovations and retrofits. The detailed guidelines attached in the document above set forth standards NU must meet when planning construction. The document states, "We are committed to reducing [our] impact by reducing materials and waste during construction, designing buildings that conserve energy and water use, planning and designing infrastructure that encourages walking and alternative forms of commuting like cycling and public transit, and creating built environments that provide opportunities to enhance the performance of the occupants."

All new construction and major renovation projects are mandated LEED certified or higher. The Office of Sustainability is consulted early in the design phase and on an on-going basis throughout the project to ensure that appropriate measures are taken and documented.

Since the adoption of our sustainable building guidelines on January 1, 2014, all construction projects have been LEED certified. All space meets the design guidelines set forth in our policy as well as in the LEED guidelines, so we have no space that is built according to a sustainable building policy, but that is not also LEED certified.
