At Stony Brook University we currently use the LEED building rating system set forth by the the USGBC. We currently have six LEED certified buildings:

Southampton Library: LEED Gold
Frey Hall: LEED Silver
Marine Sciences Research Center: LEED Silver
Student Recreation Center: No rating
West Side Dining Hall: No rating
Simons Center for Geometry & Physics: LEED Gold
Center for Excellence in Wireless & Information Technology (CEWIT): Built to LEED Certification
Medical & Research Translational (MART) Building- No rating

Purpose: Stony Brook University is dedicated to having a positive impact on the natural environment and builds/maintains its facilities and exterior locations in the most sustainable manner possible. This commitment is an essential component of the University’s climate neutrality goals, which include a 25% reduction in greenhouse gases in 2020, based on 2008 levels and ultimately achieving climate neutrality in 2050. The purpose of this Sustainable Facilities New Construction / Operations & Maintenance Policy is to outline the University’s commitment to building and operating its facilities in a sustainable manner using the following U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating systems:

A brief description of how the institution ensures compliance with green building design and construction guidelines and policies:
Policy: Stony Brook University is committed to building and operating its facilities in a sustainable manner using U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) as a guideline. The following goals apply to University new construction and existing facility operations:
• New University construction projects have a minimum goal to achieve USGBC LEED Silver status, using LEED Building Design and Construction rating system as a guideline.
• Existing University facilities will be operated using the USGBC LEED Operations and Maintenance rating system as the guideline for incorporating sustainability into facilities management.
