A brief description of the methodology used to determine the total number of courses offered and to identify sustainability course offerings, including the definitions used and the process for reviewing and/or validating the course inventory :

Tennessee Tech University’s Registrar was contacted in order to count the total number of classes offered at both undergraduate and graduate level. Then the course catalog was reviewed and all descriptions were read. Courses were categorized as “Sustainable Themed”, “Sustainable Components”, or “Not Applicable” based off of the description. Course descriptions with multi-faceted subjects outlined in them including different levels of ecology and human interaction, or human supported systems were listed as having sustainable components. Sustainable themed courses were labeled based off of: 1. having “sustainable” in the title; 2. descriptions with emphasis on environmental relationships; or combining components with the root issue of sustainability from the definition of Sustainability.
Merriam-Webster’s 1st and 3rd definitions of Sustainability were used for this process: “able to be used without being completely used up or destroyed” and “able to last or continue for a long time”. The combination of these definitions create a broad enough sense of the word in order to encapsulate the purposes of classes that are both sustainably themed and those with sustainable components to help complete this inventory.

How were courses with multiple offerings or sections counted for the figures reported above?:
Each course was counted as a single course regardless of the number of offerings or sections
