A brief description of the snow and ice removal program, policy, or practice:

Our local supplier suggested we switch to “Ultra Pro Premium Ice Melt” in the 2012-2013 winter season. (The ice melt we used in previous years was no longer available locally.) This new product is more environmentally friendly, though the switch was not for an environmental reason it was a happy bonus.

Snow fall of less than 2 inches is removed “in house” by campus grounds and maintenance staff, using two trucks with snow plows and a tractor with a snow box. For snow fall greater than two inches an outside contractor is contracted to assist with snow removal on roadways and specific parking lots.

The snow is either pushed into piles in parking lots or pushed off parking lots and roadways into specified area when parking bumpers can be moved. Bulk deicer is put on roadways/parking lots once snow is removed. (Marion campus used approximately 75 tons of bulk deicer salt per season, dependent on weather, purchased from Cargill).
Snow is removed from sidewalks/walkways “in house” using a Kutoba tractor and calcium (Ultra Pro Premium Ice Melt) in spread on sidewalks/walkway using Gator with a salt spreader and spread by hand at building entrances.
