A brief description of the key components of the custom OHSMS:
The university has an over-arching University Health and Safety Policy, consisting of a multitude of subordinate policies, programs, and procedures that outline responsibilities through the organization and establishes a framework for compliance with Federal, State, and local regulations. Through these subordinate programs and procedures, UConn HR reviews operational hazards, assesses risk, communicates hazards through training, and determines appropriate controls. Additionally, a safety management system, HuskySMS, is in place allowing PIs, supervisors, and upper management to track employee training and inspection findings. Performance is monitored through inspections of facilities and accident investigations are conducted. The institution also has several safety committees, including the state-mandated EHS Safety Committee with representation from all of HR's bargaining units that evaluates findings, accidents, and investigations, and allows representatives to bring concerns to the table with the goal of injury and illness prevention.
