The Office of Sustainability and Facilities Management have entered UIC into the national recycling competition called RecycleMania for the second year in a row. Over 600 colleges and universities participated in the 2010 RecycleMania competition that went on from January 17 and concluded on March 27. The goal of the competition was to increase awareness of campus recycling.
Recycling data received from vendors was not reported on a
weekly basis, therefore it is impossible to determine the exact amount of recyclables captured over the ten week period between January 18 and March 28. However, the
monthly totals for that period showed an increase in recycling rates from 27.18 percent in January to 31.79 percent in March.
Additionally, a number of student organizations held a recycling contest - also titled Recyclemania - in the residence halls for the duration of one month from January 14th to February 14th. During this month additional recycling bins were installed in temporary locations. A campaign was also launched to promote sustainability by means of mass emails, posters, and word of mouth.
A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign(s):
The Recyclemania 2009 figures projected a steady increase of the recycling rate on campus for the duration of the campaign.
