The University's Strategic Initiative Grant Program supports faculty research that advances the strategic initiative themes of Bold Aspirations, KU's strategic plan. Each of these address issues of sustainability to various degrees:
- Sustaining the Planet, Powering the World
- Building Communities, Expanding Opportunities
- Promoting Well-Being, Finding Cures
- Harnessing Information, Multiplying Knowledge.

Two levels of funding are available. Level I grants (over $50,000) support requests that advance the strategic initiative themes through major, multidisciplinary proposals to strengthen existing research teams or centers, develop promising new research areas and teams, enable groups to build a sustainable foundation for ongoing collaboration, or enhance the competitiveness of applications to external agencies for multi-investigator program projects/centers. Level II grants ($5,000 to $50,000) support preparation of proposals on strategic initiatives with application deadlines in the near future.

The KU library system provides topic specific staff for aiding students and professors in their sustainability related research. Below are two of the most relevant library staff members devoted to aiding students and faculty in sustainability related research:

1. Scott McEathron - Environmental History and Environmental Studies
2. Keith Russell - Environmental Engineering

Additionally the libraries curate a research guide specifically for topics in Environmental Studies.
