Staff Assembly Environment & Safety Committee

A brief description of the employee educators program (1st program):

The Environment and Safety Committee is an appointed committee by the President of the Staff Assembly. The committee is responsible for monitoring the safety and security of the university working environments at the Health Sciences Campus, University Park Campus, and auxiliary campuses. The committee reviews and reports on sustainability programs, investigates disaster preparedness on all campus locations and works closely with the Office of Sustainability and Department of Public Safety.

Members of the Environment and Safety Committee become catalysts for various environmental- and sustainability-related topics at USC and beyond. Members receive information and training on the university's sustainability goals, initiatives and challenges, and they are provided exposure to campus sustainability experts, allowing the members to become sustainability experts as well.
They then engage with fellow USC employees by sharing information on how they can live more sustainably and can use their power to help USC and the broader community become more sustainable. To do so, the committee shares information about campus events and workshops.

During Earth Month, the committee hosts the “How to be a Sustainable Trojan” event to educate fellow USC employees on USC's sustainability efforts and how they can help the university achieve its goals in addition to demonstrating ways to become more sustainable in the office and at home.

WalkUSC: Sustainability-Focused Walks
Walk participants (typically staff and faculty) have the option to walk and learn about our campus sustainability efforts and how they can “walk the talk” by becoming a Sustainable Trojan. These walks are led by 1 sustainability-trained educator, last about 30 minutes and occur 12 weeks out of the year. More Information: https://workwell.usc.edu/events/walkusc/

Peer-Peer Waste Education
The USC FPM Zero Waste auditors (4) conduct regular trainings on proper waste management to staff in USC Housing, Aramark staff, and FPM waste management and grounds crews. The trainings last about 30 minutes and educates staff on how to dispose of waste properly into external bins (compost, recycling and landfill). The goal of the trainings are to reach all staff in USC Housing and Hospitality, FPM waste management, FPM Grounds Crews and Aramark staff, with focus on training new and incoming staff each year.

USC Housing and Hospitality staff: Trainings are offered six times per year with an estimated 95 USC Housing and Hospitality staff trained per year. Aramark staff (primarily janitorial staff: Trained as needed by the USC FPM Zero Waste team with topics covering the value of proper disposal of landfill, recycle and compost waste from interior centralized waste bins. Aramark Staff are also trained on what types of waste issues to report, which types of bags to use and where to correctly dispose of waste (via the different landfill, recycling and compost streams). 100-200 Aramark staff are trained each year. FPM waste management and grounds crews: Trained on an as-needed basis, with about 50 staff trained per year. In general , the four FPM Zero Waste Auditors spend about 30% of their time on educational related activities, and work 49 weeks out of the year.
USC Office of Sustainability also offers tips to Staff, Faculty, Postdocs and Students on how to make their Event a Zero-Waste Event, and how to Green their Office.
